The first printings of Sibiu from 1525

According to the historical literature the first Transylvanian press functioned in Sibiu between 1528 and 1530, and none of its printings did not remain until our days. In this study I present three of the first printings of this press, extracted form the cover of a volume of the Teleki-Bolyai Library of Târgu Mureş. These printings were of one page, decorated with initials and border ornaments. One of them contained a calendar of the moving feasts, the other one the text of the Credo, while the third one the following religious texts: Our Father, Ave Maria, Decalogue, Magnificat and the antiphonies Veni sancte spiritus and Salve regina. Based on the text placed in the front of the calendar results that it was the first printing of Transylvania and it was printed in Sibiu in 1525 by the typographers Lukas Trapoldner and Valentin Corvinus. With they content, the printings seem that had serve a double goal: to strengthen the faith, and to serve or to propagate the cult of Holy Mary.

Antisemitic movements of 1883 in Budapest in the press

Vivid antisemitic demonstrations and turmoils occured throughout Hungary after the charges had been dropped in the blood libel affair of Tiszaeszlar. In Budapest the riots took place between August 7 and 13 of 1883 right after one of the defendants brought to court had arrived to the capital. The study attempts to sketch the events of the week that kept the citizens in profound and steady excitement relying mainly on press material due to the lack of archival records. The press material used consists of papers of both the governing party and the opposition with some christian, antisemitic, jewish related organs and humour magazines.

Based on the press and the reports of Elek Thaisz (head of the dep.) and lt. Jozsef Somogyi we managed to create a list of the participants gotten under arrest and/or injured so to analyze the social contents of the series of turmoils. The list includes 206 persons in custody and 19 injured with their data (first and last names, age, place of origin, occupation, marital status and religion).

We had also taken into consideration and tried to analyze the mass as an entity and its behavioral characteristics rather than the individuals themselves so to reveal. We concluded that the riots were gradually losing their antisemitic features and had turned into some plundering and pointless devastation carried out by the mass.
