An Unknown Office of Saint Gerard

The first canonizations in Hungary were made in 1083. The feast of the Hermits Andrew and Benedict was immediately celebrated with its own office. The first movements in honour of King Stephen were composed when he was canonized, and the office was completed at the same time as that of Prince Saint Emeric in the 1260s or 1270s. Until now it had been thought that for the feast of Gerard, the fifth member of the group canonization, no Hungarian office had been com-posed. This assertion is refuted by the discovery of a complete office in one of the medieval Zagreb codexes. To date only one office from Venice was known of, which commemorated the bishop as a martyr.

Might there be a link between the office found in our source and the Venice office for the feast of Gerard? Comparison of the texts makes it clear that no similarity or kinship can be demon-strated between the Venice and Zagreb offices. On the basis of the contents of the texts of the reponsories, and countless turns phrase, it can be construed that in compiling the office the Venice author used a legend, one of whose extant manuscripts is in the library of the Cathedral of Saint Mark.

What sources might the author of the Zagreb office have used? Whoever compiled the office may conceivably have had as primary sources the oratio from the Hungarian sources, the Minor and Major Legends and perhaps the Deliberatio. As regards the text of the office, particularly great emphasis is given to Gerard's positions as a priest, prelate, and bishop, his familiarity with the sciences, and his activity as a teacher. Of the personages who feature in the Gerard legends, only Prince Emeric is mentioned by name in the office, though many geographical place names are used (Venice, Gallia, Sicambria, Pest, Csanád, Pannonia). Poetically the office is heterogeneous, vacil-lating between verse and prose. There being no other sources, nothing is known of the melody of the office.

What occasion and location made necessary and possible the compilation of the office? Accord- ing to the Major Legend, Queen Elisabeth, the widow of King Charles Robert, prayed to Gerard when seriously ill, and on returning to health in thanks she made generous donations to the Mon-astery of St Mary in Csanád, enlarging it and having the relics reburied there. Perhaps this large-scale event in the former bishop's residence made it necessary to complete the liturgical veneration of Gerard by creating an office. The fact that the office of this martyr bishop should appear in a fourteenth-century breviary can be explained by the fact that the renaissance of the veneration of Gerard coincided with the rule of the Anjou kings in Hungary.

Nothing is known of the identity of the author of the office, nor how it can have found its way into a codex which principally reflects the liturgical traditions of the Zagreb bishopric. The linguistic traits of the office indicate a cultured, possibly university-educated author with a scholarly bent. In establishing the date the office was compiled, two data can assist. The movement Novum sidus emicuit, quoted in the hymn of the Vespers, features in the office of Saint Elisabeth, which was conceivably composed not long after her canonization in 1235. The place name Sicambria in the responsory preceding the hymn first appears in Simon Kézai's Gesta Hungarorum written between 1282 and 1285. Thus it can be postulated that the Zagreb office of Gerard was written in 1235 at the earliest, or after 1285.

In the footprints of Master L. F.

The Transylvanian Diaconus Laurentius (Diacul Lorint) run his own printing office in Kron-stadt (Brassó, Brasov, Corona) between 1567 and 1569, where he published four ceremonial vol-umes of Bizantinian Rite in Church Slavic. In 1971 the Rumanian linguist Alexandru Mares pub-lished a paper stating that his mother tongue certainly was not Rumanian. Starting from that assumption a few years later Paul Binder and Arnold Hutmann have drawn up the carrier of the earlier unidentified printer based on recently detected archive documents. He came from a hand-worker Saxon family settled in the outskirts of Kronstadt, and not from the patrician family of the same name, well known citizens there of long line. Laurentius Fronius Coronensis matriculated at the famous Grammar School of the humanist Johann Honterus in 1556. In the same year and the next he prepared woodcuts for Luther's Hymnal and Psalter (Geystliche Lieder und Psalmen… 1556), and the bilingual Erazmian New Testament (Novum Testamentum Graeco–Latinum, 1557). In these volumes he signed his cuts as L. F. Later he acted as printer in Alba Julia (Gyulafehérvár) since 1578, and published the Osmoglasnik (1578) and the four Gospels in Church Slavic (Tetroevan-gelie, 1579), than appeared also as printer in Hermannstadt (Szeben, Cibinium, Sibiu) in 1593. In the meantime, between 1571 and 1576 Lorenz (Lorencz) Schreiber alias Fronius had salary as a scribe to the quart of town Kronstadt (Quartalschreiber, Quartale Catherina), and also as painter for the decoration of the hall of the town inn.

The above mentioned prints were all registered in Hungarian and Rumanian bibliogpraphies but the woodcutter known as L. F. and the printer and also town scribe himself became identified only in 1975 as one and the same person named differently in Rumanian, Saxon, Latin or Hungarian.

Laurentius Fronius also seems to be the printer of a Hungarian Hymnal (A keresztyeni gyüleke-zetben valo isteni diczeretek…) of 1566 published at Várad (Varadinum, Oradea, Großvardein). His L. F. signal on the fontispiece mistakenly became explained in the 20th century as Literatus Franciscus of Debrecen, supposed editor of this Hymnal. As Fronius was a born Transylvanian Saxon and Lutheran, applied by the owner of the printing office, i.e. Hoffhalter, a born Polish, Fronius can be responsible only for the enterprising print of a manuscript or an earlier edition of the same book, not for selection of these hymns, canticles, and paraphrases, emendation of their text, or for their proper arrangement.

E forrásokból kirajzolódik a gráci könyvkereskedelem vázlatos képe is.

Bár a könyvkereskedők megnyilatkozásai a magyarországi bizományosaikkal folytatott kereskedelemről alapvetően csak a pecsételés módjára, körülményeire korlátozódtak, ennek környezetében mégis érzékelhetővé váltak a két szomszédos ország közötti közvetlen kommunikáció lehetőségei illetve néhány szemléletes példája is. A Grazer Bauernzeitung többek között kifejezetten magyarországi újságként is ("ungrische Provinzial-Zeitung") definiálta magát. A földrajzi kapcsolatokat postajáratok létesítése segítette elő: ezáltal Grác közvetlen kapcsolatot teremthetett Magyarország déli, délkeleti részein fekvő városaihoz és a velük határos társországok helységeihez is.

Az előfizetést gyűjtők, kollektorok listái – amelyek üzleti levelezés hiányában alapvető támpontot nyújtottak a vizsgálathoz – jellegükből adódóan csak óvatosan használhatók fel, mégis ezekből a forrásokból lehetett kideríteni, hogy a gráci könyvkereskedőknek Magyarországon Pozsonyban, Budán, Pesten, Gyorött, Sopronban, Selmecbányán, Újvidéken, továbbá Erdélyben Nagyszebenben, ill. Horvátországban Zágrábban, Károlyvárosban, Eszéken és Varasdon is voltak kereskedelmi partnerei.

A tanulmány végén vizsgálatunk ezzel ellentétes szempontot követett: magyarországi kiadványok jelenlétét kutattuk a gráci előfizetési felhívásokban.
